Canon the company was started in 1933 in Japan as the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory. at that time the leading country for camera production was Germany, but their cameras were very expensive. Goro Yoshida and his two partners produced the Kwanon, a cheaper 35mm rangefinder camera. At that time the company did not have its own lens so they formed an association with Nippon Kogaku Kogyo (who later founded the Nikon company) to use his lenses in their cameras. The first commercial camera produced by Canon in 1936 was the Hansa Canon which was a great success. 
After the second world war the company officially changed its name to Canon on September 15 1947 unifying the names of the the lens, company and camera. The company expanded slowly producing such classic cameras as the Serenar 50mm in 1951, the Canonet in 1961 and the EOS 650 in 1987.
The famous Powershot range was introduced in 1996 with the Powershot 600 and was the first Canon Digital Camera. In 1998 the EOS D2000 digital SLR camera was produced aimed at professional photographers with several advancements in digital photography. The XL1 digital video camera was alsointroduced inthat year. The XL1 video camera with superior reliability and functions was adopted by NASA as their official video camcorder.
In 2002 Canon introduced the EOS D60, a cost effective camera with superior functions followed by the EOS 10D in 2003. Together these cameras pushed Canon to the forefront of digital camera technology. The EOS Kiss digital, introduced in 2003, was a huge success.
Canon also currently produce a range digital camcorders including the FV200KIT and the FV30 introduced in 2002 and the FVM1 and IXYDVM2 introduced in 2003.
