The Canon PowerShot SD630 Digital Elph is thin and stylish with enhanced features for taking pictures that makes it easy to use and produce great, professional looking images. With a large three inch LCD screen PowerShot SD630 is an example of the superb engineering that Canon builds into every camera.
The 6 Megapixel (MP) PowerShot SD630 is small at just 3.5″ x 2.2″ and doesn’t have an optical viewfinder and is small enough to fit into a pocket. It weighs 5.8 ounces so isn’t the lightest compact camera but is easy to use although the small size of the controls may make it difficult to use if you have large hands. The large LCD screen is great for framing your shots but does leave little room on this small sized camera for the controls.
The Canon SD630 has a good range of features and is flexible. The 6 MP CCD has a 35mm to 105mm zoom lens which does have a fairly narrow aperture range of f/2.8 to 3/4.9. Shutter speed range is 1/1,500 to 15 seconds. which is about average for this model range. there are automatic, programmable and manual exposure modes, again average for this type of camera. The sensitivity range is slightly better than Sony’s or Fujifilm’s latest models and gives good low light flexibility.
There are also modes for the usual portrait and night time modes as well as beaches, plants, fireworks, underwater and snowy day modes. An underwater housing is also available. Artistic effects can be achieved with the Color accent and Color Swap modes.
Photos taken with the Canon SD630 are good even in the low ISO ranges. Above ISO 800 there is, predictable, some noise although it is not so bad that the photos are unusable.
Overall the Canon SD630 is a good ultra compact camera with a wide range of features and good low light flexibility. It is almost the same as the less expensive SD600 with a larger LCD screen so if you are willing to pay the extra for a bigger screen this camera may be a good choice.
